Jessica Lozada - Environmental Specialist
Meet Jessica Lozada, an Environmental Specialist at RS&H.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I currently work as an Environmental Specialist in the Transportation-Infrastructure Department. I work on highway noise studies and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental documents. Growing up, I was always the ‘nerd’ that loved school and wanted a challenge academically and personally. Science was never my strongest subject in school, so to be honest that is the reason I decided to pursue science as a career. I always had an interest in the environment from a young age and I figured what better way to combine that interest with the challenge of a science degree. I also have a belief that we need to preserve the natural environment for future generations. There are so many natural wonders that I get to experience and live now and I really hope my grandchildren and great-grandchildren get that same experience. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Tennessee State University and my Master of Science in Environmental Science from Indiana University.
Why is diversity in STEM important?
You always hear that STEM is the future, which I agree with. With that being said, I’ve noticed that although there has been this big push for STEM careers, there hasn’t been as big of a push for diversity within STEM. I’ve participated in several minority and STEM initiatives while pursuing my degrees, and having people that looked like me in my field of interest really motivated me to keep going and push through those barriers. Everyone from every walk of life has something to contribute to this world, which is why it is so important to have diversity and representation in the STEM field. In order to go forward in life and to be able to solve all the complex issues humanity faces and will face, we need people from all cultures, all walks of life, working on innovative solutions.
What is your greatest career accomplishment?
I am still pretty new in my career, but I would have to say that my greatest accomplishment thus far has been the opportunity to work mostly independently on my first project. I felt a greater sense of responsibility and ownership since I was responsible for the document that would be sent to the client.
What advice would you give to youth interested in STEM careers?
I would say to continue working hard and don’t be afraid to reach out to someone in the field for help and mentorship. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it weren’t for all of the wonderful resources that were offered to me during my studies. There are leaders in the STEM field that would love to guide you in your studies and early career. It really is a big community!
